Germany has asked the EU
Commission to exempt it from the Stability Pact's spending
limits by activating the'safeguard clause' to allow for
derogations for defence investments. "We can confirm that
Germany has requested the activation of the national safeguard
clause for the period 2025-2028," a spokesperson for the German
Finance Ministry told ANSA, adding that it is "an important
complementary measure to allow greater national defence spending
while maintaining fiscal sustainability." Reuters anticipated
the activation.
