The Italian Embassy in Ukraine took part, on the 39th anniversary of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster, in the commemoration of the victims of the accident, in particular those rescuers who heroically sacrificed themselves to protect the civilian population from the consequences of the radioactive material spillage, tragic consequences amplified by the denialism of the Soviet authorities at the time.
The ceremony, held in the area of the former nuclear power plant, was attended by Environment Minister Svitlana Grynchuk, First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Oleksander Kornieenko, local authorities and the diplomatic corps. "The memory of the events of Chernobyl is a powerful spur to the quest for peace in which we are engaged today," said Ambassador Carlo Formosa, recalling how in 1994 independent Ukraine voluntarily chose to give up its nuclear arsenal, with the aim of helping to build a safer and cleaner Europe and world. "The Chernobyl nuclear site has suffered extensive damage since the occupation by Moscow's troops in 2022, and last February a Russian drone attack scratched the protective shell covering the remains of the damaged reactor: serious facts that pose a threat to everyone's health and the environment," the ambassador concluded.
