The Lithuanian authorities intend to modernise and strengthen the infrastructure of the road connecting Vilnius with the city of Augustow, Poland, the only overland route, in addition to the Kaunas-Warsaw road, part of the European 'Via Baltica' link, connecting Lithuania and Poland via the Suwalki corridor. Politico reports.
According to the Lithuanian Deputy Defence Minister, Tomas Godliauskas, the works will improve conditions for the transport of goods and, in particular, military mobility and conditions for the possible evacuation of civilians in the event of conflict.
With a total length of less than 100 kilometres between Belarus and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad, the Suwalki corridor represents one of the most sensitive points on the entire NATO eastern front.
