President Sergio Mattarella on
Tuesday lamented Italy's low wage levels and the impact on
families' ability to make ends meet amid the cost-of-living
crisis as he visited the BSP Pharmaceuticals company in Latina
ahead of May Day.
"We all know how crucial wage issues are for the reduction of
inequalities, for fair enjoyment of the fruits of innovation, of
progress," Mattarella said.
"So many families cannot cope with the rising cost of living.
"Insufficient wages are a big issue for Italy".
He also demanded that migrant workers get a fair deal when it
comes to salaries.
"Migrants getting with wages that, according to the ILO, are a
quarter lower than those of Italians and scandalous phenomena
such as forced labour must be firmly opposed," Mattarella.
"The character of our society is measured by the dignity of the
working person, in order to respect Article 36 of our
Constitution.
"Let the principle of humanity never fail to be the cornerstone
of our everyday actions.
"Pope Francis reminded us of this in his Easter blessing, his
last message".
Mattarella expressed concern about the threat of US tariffs
damaging the economy too.
"New risks have arisen from the prospects of the widespread use
of tariffs, an ancient form of showing force, which can hinder
the right to access to care, to health, for all the world's
people, especially the poorest and most fragile," the head of
State said.
"Prospects that, moreover, produce negative effects on the
global economy. "Effects that may also affect our country".
