The United States maintained its
position as the second-largest destination for European Union
agri-food exports in 2024, accounting for 13%, behind only the
United Kingdom on 23%.
The US was also the market with the highest growth compared to
2023, with an increase of €3.3 billion, equivalent to 12%,
according to a snapshot presented by the European Commission in
its annual agri-food report.
The report highlights that "despite ongoing global challenges,"
trade in the sector continues to show positive developments,
with an overall trade surplus of €63.6 billion. Both exports and
imports increased overall, it said.
As for exports, they reached a record level of €235.4 billion in
2024, a 3% rise compared to 2022 and 2023 (up €6.6 billion).
The main export categories from the EU to the U.S. in 2024 were
wine and wine products (17% of EU export value), cereal-based
products and milling products (10%), alcoholic beverages and
spirits (9%), and olives and olive oil (9%).
After London and Washington, Beijing is the third-largest
destination for EU agri-food exports.
Agri-food imports also saw an 8% increase in 2024, rising by
€12.4 billion to a total of €171.8 billion.
This increase was mainly driven by higher prices for products
like cocoa, coffee, fruit, and nuts.
The United Kingdom, Ukraine, and Brazil remain among the main
countries of origin for imports, while Côte d'Ivoire, Ukraine,
and Nigeria saw the biggest increases in exports to the EU.
Imports from Russia (-€865 million, -46%) and Australia (-€722
million, -28%) declined, on the other hand.
